While in Darkness

My new book, While in Darkness There Is Light, is now available for preorder from Amazon. Search Louella Bryant's books and you should find it. Here's the "position statement":

During the Vietnam War, a group of American friends carved their own path by dropping out of college and traveling to Australia, where they established an agrarian commune called Rosebud Farm. The friends, fueled by idealism and family wealth, committed themselves to farming, fishing, taking great risks, and dealing with the consequences of their choices, among those consequences the tragic death of twenty-four-year-old Charlie Dean.

The book will be in bookstores the first week of September. In the meantime, there's so much to do! A press kit to put together, including summary of the book, my bio, questions for the media and more questions for book groups, pictures, flyers, bookmarks, business cards, and a book trailer video. I have a book tour to plan, newspapers and magazines to approach, websites to design, and electronic releases to send. PR for the book is as much work as writing the manuscript (well, not quite). I suppose it's similar to pregnancy: getting pregnant is the fun part; the labor and delivery are another thing. And then there's all the child care once the tyke is among us.

Kathleen Norris says that writers "are people who believe in the power of words to effect change in the human heart." I think While in Darkness will do that for its readers. Check my website
( for the latest news about publication.

I'll be starting a new project at Vermont Studio Center next week, mingling in easy moments with other writers and artists. The Center is in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and the weather promises to be cold, rainy and miserable--just right for digging into a new pad of foolscap. There will be breaks for pear juice at Bad Girls Cafe, of course, and I hope the coffee is always hot.
